“The
Crow Flies” is an adventure geared toward a fifteen to forty year
age group. The story begins, in New York City’s Central Park when
a crow’s egg falls from its nest, slightly cracks, and is picked
up and replaced by a nearby homeless drunk named Travis.
The crow’s parents are rarely around and seemingly have lost interest
in the crow and the egg containing his brother; but the compassionate
drunk, Travis, happily assumes the role of parenting both eggs.
Crow number one is hatched first and astonishes both himself and Travis
with the knowledge to speak and understand English and be able to interact
with humans. Travis names him “Crow” and his brother upon
hatching, “Brother” who has none of his Crow’s special
talents.
What follows is a coming of age story revolving around the destruction
of the World Trade Center, the recovery of a large sum of cash and diamonds,
the rehabilitation of Travis, and a cross country airplane journey by
Travis and Crow and eventually a return trip east by motorcycle. The
plot revolves around Travis reuniting with his abandoned family on the
west coast and Crow going out to seek his fortune, and explore the wonders
of the world. He saves a suicidal girl, negotiates a peace treaty with
some deadly falcons in the Grand Canyon and changes the life of a red
necked bigot.
Crow’s uncanny ability to predict when a slot machine is going
to pay off allows them to win several million dollars in Vegas. The
two set off for New York, on a BMW motorcycle. Along the trip they encounter
several interesting engaging, and believable characters who will end
up in some way influencing their lives. This book explores relationships,
love, bigotry, hate, death, charity, compassion, and humility.
Travis, the ex drunk and Crow befriend a paraplegic motorcyclist Jeremiah
who convinces them to join him on a trip to Montana. Crow visits the
Crow Indian reservation where he is viewed as a messiah. He meets general
George Custer and brokers a deal to return millions in hidden gold in
exchange for a weekly shipment of whisky.
Throughout the book, Crow experiences several dream sequences that take
him on some very strange and exciting adventures. In the end Crow, Travis,
and the reader are not quite sure if the entire journey was real or
all just a dream.
